2019 Schriever essay contest winners announced
The 2019 General Bernard A. Schriever Memorial Essay Contest, sponsored by the Lance P. Sijan Chapter of the Air Force Association and U.S. Space Force, recently announced its 2019 winners. The essay competition aims to stimulate thought, discussion and debate on matters relating how the Space Force and Air Force provide space capabilities for the joint force and the nation.

WGS-11+ Leverages Commercial Technology to Deliver Twice the Capability
Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS)-11+ is a Space and Missile Systems Center Pacesetter for the rapid application and fielding of commercial technology. The SMC Production Corps and Portfolio Architect’s Mission System Integration team jointly championed a successful first-ever, cross-corps Systems Requirements Review (SRR) to help the Government and Boeing reach a mutual agreement on a system performance specification to satisfy warfighter needs quickly. The WGS program office, leveraging enterprise partnerships and a collaborative culture with Army, Navy, and Boeing systems engineers, worked closely together to ensure the system’s technical baseline will maximize value to the warfighter on an aggressive 5-year schedule.

SMC & NDIA hosts 4th successful Resiliency Conference
The Space and Missile Systems Center’s Special Programs Directorate hosted the Fourth Semi-Annual Resiliency Forum sponsored by the National Defense Industrial Association at Northrop Grumman Space Park in Redondo Beach Nov. 21, 2019. The Resiliency Forum served as an opportunity for the Air Force to share and update the space industry on the latest resiliency activities to include those designed to help protect and defend U.S. space systems.

14th Air Force Redesignated as Space Operations Command
By order of Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett, effective Dec. 20, 2019, Fourteenth Air Force was officially redesignated as Space Operations Command. Air Force military and civilian personnel previously assigned to Fourteenth Air Force are now assigned to SpOC by virtue of the redesignation action.

USSPACECOM expands key allied space partnerships through multi-nation operations
National security in the space domain continues to expand its operational coordination and capabilities between the U.S. Space Command and allied nations. A multi-national space force, a strategic defense partnership between several nations including the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, operate together at the Combined Space Operations Center. Additional nations collaborating on space operations with the CSpOC include Germany, France and New Zealand.

With the stroke of a pen, U.S. Space Force becomes a reality
President Trump signed into law Dec. 20 the sprawling, $738 billion defense bill, making history by creating the Space Force as a stand-alone, sixth branch of the U.S. military and guaranteeing for the first time 12 weeks of paid parental leave for federal workers.

ARLINGTON. Va. (AFNS) – Air Force Secretary Barbara M. Barrett praised the formal creation of the U.S. Space Force Dec. 20, identifying it as a critical capability in defending the nation and pledging that the first new branch of the military since 1947 would be established with speed and clarity of purpose.
