On May 23, the Department of the Air Force released updated guidance for implementation of Executive Order 14183, ‘Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness, aligning with updated Department of Defense policy and addressing medical standards, accession, retention and administrative processes for transgender Airmen and Guardians.

The updated policy outlines the procedures for voluntary separation of transgender Airmen and Guardians and the identification process for involuntary separation. This includes the process for identifying as transgender, initiating voluntary separation and receiving applicable benefits and entitlements. The policy aims to provide a clear and respectful process for those separating from service.

An additional policy update establishes that service members and applicants may be considered for a retention or accession waiver on a case-by-case basis when there is a compelling government interest and their service directly supports the Department's warfighting capabilities.
