The U.S. Space Force released updated dress and appearance guidance Jan. 13, formally introducing the design of its new service dress uniform and outlining the transition plan for the force. The policy, detailed in SPFI 36-2903, is a significant step in establishing the service's unique culture and visual identity.

The new service dress is designed to replace the modified Air Force uniform that Guardians have worn since the service's inception.

“Our service dress uniform represents the unique identity of Guardians, blending heritage with a modern design that reflects our unity and mission,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman. “From the start, Guardian feedback shaped its design and fit. I know the force will wear it with pride.”

While a final mandatory wear date has not been set, the policy gives Guardians a minimum of 12 months’ notice to transition once a date is established. In the interim, purchase and wear are optional. However, all personnel transferring into the Space Force will be required to purchase the new uniform effective Jan. 15, 2026.
